  8. Note: when you install Expert ScreenSaver, the program will be 
  9. placedin the program group named "Expert Software".

  12.     *   *  Installing Expert ScreenSaver  *  *
  13.  
  14. BEFORE YOU INSTALL:  MAKE SURE THAT WINDOWS IS CONFIGURED TO
  15. DISPLAY 256 COLORS.  SEE YOUR WINDOWS GUIDE FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON
  16. HOW TO CHANGE YOUR VIDEO DRIVER SETTINGS.

  18. 1. Installation: 
  19.     
  20.     1. Insert Expert ScreenSaver CD into drive D: .
  21.     2. From the Windows Program Manager, choose Run from the 
  22.            File Menu.
  23.     3. Type D:\SETUP, then click the OK button.
  24.     4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  27. 2. Starting ScreenSaver automatically when you start Windows:
  28.  
  29. Place the Expert ScreenSaver program icon in the StartUp Program 
  30. Group.  
  31.  
  32. We recommend you also do the following:
  33.     
  34.     1. Highlight the Expert ScreenSaver program icon.
  35.     2. While holding down the ALT key, press the ENTER KEY.
  36.     3. You will see the Program Item Properties dialog box 
  37.            appear.
  38.     4. Check the box labeled "Run Minimized", then click OK.
  39.  
  40. This way, Expert ScreenSaver will automatically run without you 
  41. having to wait for it to load and then minimize every time you 
  42. start Windows.

  45. 2.a. Exiting Expert ScreenSaver:
  46.  
  47. If you have made any changes to your ScreenSaver settings, we 
  48. recommend that you exit the program by clicking on the QUIT
  49. button. This way, all the changesyou have made will be saved 
  50. and will be in effect next time you run the program.  Exiting
  51. Windows while the ScreenSaver program is still running will
  52. cause you to lose any settings changes you have made.

  55. 3. If you are using Norton Desktop 2.x or other Windows
  56. alternative desktops or you are having trouble installing the
  57. program:
  58.  
  59. Check to see if your System.ini file reads as follows: 
  60.      [boot]
  61.      shell=progman.exe
  62.  
  63. Expert ScreenSaver will not install properly if 'shell' is set
  64. to anything different such as "Norton". All the files will be
  65. installed on the directory you have specified, however, no 
  66. program group or icon will be created. If this is the case, 
  67. create your own program group and drag the file EXPTSAVR.EXE
  68. into the new program group from the File Manager.  Please
  69. consult your Windows or Desktop guide for more information on
  70. how to set up applications to run from program groups.

  75.     *  *  Uninstalling or Re-installing *  *
  76.  
  77. 4.a.  To uninstall:
  78.  
  79. Remove the following files from your Windows directory:
  80.  
  81. - Expert.scr
  82. - all  .ESS (Expert ScreenSaver Picture Collection) files.
  83. - all  .ETN (Album Thumbnail image) files.
  84. - all  .ETI (Main Screen Thumbnail image) files.
  85. - Exptscene.bmp
  86. - Expertss.ini

  88. 4.b.  To re-install:
  89. We recommend that you remove all of the above files from your
  90. Windows directory when you re-install.  Any .ESS or .ETN file that
  91. remain in your Windows directory will contain information about
  92. the picture files contained in that directory.  If you have
  93. deleted these picture files, you will get a "Cannot find Bitmap"
  94. error.

  98.         *  *  Fractal Compression Files  *   *
  99.  
  100. 5. The photographs in Expert ScreenSaver are compressed using
  101. fractal transform technology.  This requires that all ScreenSaver
  102. pictures (.ESP files) be accompanied on the same directory by an
  103. appropriate template file (.FTT file). If you move your pictures,
  104. remember to move both files to the new destination, otherwise the
  105. program will not be able to decompress the images.

  109.     *  *  Windows Control Panel Module *  *
  110.  
  111. 6. Although you can change most of the settings for Expert
  112. ScreenSaver from the program, you can also make changes to
  113. settings from the Windows Control Panel/Desktop application. The
  114. name of the ScreenSaver module is named "Expert ScreenSaver v2" 
  115. and should be the active selection in the Control Panel/Desktop
  116. Screen Saver section when the program has been loaded.

  118. When active, Expert ScreenSaver controls the screen saver and
  119. wallpaper functions. But when you exit, the program returns your 
  120. Windows application to the exact settings that existed before you
  121. started the program.  All screen savers or wallpapers that were 
  122. active before starting Expert ScreenSaver will then be displayed, 
  123. even though you might have disabled them while Expert ScreenSaver
  124. was running.

  129.    *  * Using Expert ScreenSaver with other Screen Savers *  *

  131. 7. For best results when using Expert ScreenSaver with other 
  132. Screen Savers:
  133.  
  134. From the Windows/Control Panel/Desktop application:
  135. - Make sure that the selected screen saver is Expert ScreenSaver.
  136. - Set the Wallpaper option to <none>.  Expert ScreenSaver will
  137.   work best when it doesn't have to compete with other wallpaper
  138.   settings from the Window's control panel.
  139. - If you have placed the Expert ScreenSaver program icon in the 
  140.   start-up Program Group, make sure that this is the only screen
  141.   saver that will be loaded automatically when you start Windows.

  144.     *  * Using Expert ScreenSaver with Other Software *  *
  145.  
  146. 8.  When using certain software, most notably older versions of
  147. paint and draw programs, (PageMaker 4.0, Corel Draw 3.0, etc.) you
  148. may experience a change in the colors of the image you are working
  149. on when the Wallpaper changes.  This occurs when the Windows 256
  150. color palette changes with the new Wallpaper image and the
  151. software you are using does not recognize the color change.  To
  152. avoid this, simply turn off the Wallpaper changing function.  
  153. Minimize, then maximize the program you were working on and the
  154. image will then return to its original colors.  If this doesn't
  155. solve the problem, turn off and Quit Expert ScreenSaver while you
  156. work with your application. YOUR FILE WILL NOT BE AFFECTED, ONLY
  157. THE WAY IT IS DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN AT THE TIME.
